THUNK – The Cape Town Project
By admin on Mar 02, 2010 with Comments 3
When it began in 2005, the Cape Town Project was geared toward raising money for the South African philanthropic organization Ikamva Labantu, which provides health services, employment opportunities, and basic necessities like food and water to women and children afflicted with the HIV/AIDS virus. The 2006 Project built on its original mission through the administration of an in-depth performing arts camp at a community center in Mitchells Plain, one of Cape Towns most destitute townships. The 2009 Cape Town Project is now scheduled to bring these arts education workshops into at least five schools throughout Cape Towns Western Flats while continuing with fundraising efforts for local charities. The arts education seminars of the 2009 project will feature workshops in acting, dance, musical theatre, and vocal training. Some performance venues will include the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the South African Jewish Museum, Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, and local churches and community centers throughout the townships. In expanding its audience and delivering its workshops directly to South African students, Thunk hopes to maximize its time spent in Cape Town and share its music with as many people as possible. The Cape Town Project will not only raise awareness and funds to help South Africans cope with the HIV/AIDS crisis, but will also inspire South African children to discover their limitless potential and express themselves through art. www.thunksings.com
